What is the Junior League of Bakersfield?

During the year many of you will be asked by curious co-workers, prospective members, family, and friends, What is the Junior League? Here are some of the things you may want to share with them.

The Junior League of Bakersfield is a training organization for women. It is a wonderful opportunity for women to learn new leadership and management skills that they might not get to learn in their normal routine. Some of the skills are the following: Program Development, Advocacy, Business Planning, Public Speaking, Interpersonal skills, Nonprofit Management, Fundraising, Facilitating and Setting an Effective Agenda for Meetings and many more.

The Junior League promotes and encourages women to utilize their new skills and talents by giving their time as volunteers in the community. The JLB has a 50 year history of community projects that we initiated and implemented to improve the lives of women, children and seniors in Kern County. For many of our members, the community volunteer component is the most rewarding aspect of being a leaguer. JLB current project, WIN (Women’s Incentive Network), is one that we developed for women at risk by giving them knowledge and skills that will help them throughout their daily lives. The program includes sessions on parenting, computer skills, nutrition, women’s and children’s health, financial training, continuing education and a resume building workshop. The feeling of accomplishment from helping others is one of the most treasured in our memories.

The Junior League of Bakersfield works to build a better community by improving the physical surrounding of Downtown Bakersfield. The renovation of our historic headquarters was an incredible challenge that is ongoing. The Junior League not only improved the neighborhood but uses the building to help other nonprofits by giving them access to the building when they need it.

The Junior League is an organization that encompasses an environment of nurturing and caring. It is a great place to meet quality women and to establish life-long friendships. The friendships and support are remarkable, because the women themselves are of substance and are remarkable.

The Junior League of Bakersfield is a well-managed organization that has successful fundraisers year after year that sustain the leagues training, projects, goals and objectives.

It is with great pride that I get to lead this organization and share with others what our value is to the community. I hope you won’t be shy, and spread the story of what we do and how we help others.

Community Voice

What we appreciate most about the partnership work of Alliance and Junior League of Bakersfield (JLB) is that it is more than about the money – it is about the gift of time. The fact that JLB members spend their time to develop and present a workshop it is an opportunity for our clients to experience first-hand that members of their community are committed to helping them reclaim their lives.

Feedback from our clients has been very positive – they have expressed how kind and caring JLB members are and that the classes were an opportunity to learn in an enjoyable manner.
